I spent a good few hours re-working the About page on my blog at Heatheronhertravels.com and thought I’d share with you my new, improved version and why it was worth the effort. The aim is to improve my blog making it something that will attract lots of readers and ultimately perhaps become an income source for me.
Why you need a great About Page
In order to stand out in an increasingly crowded online and blog marketplace, you need to differentiate yourself from the crowd, from the bland corporate travel-brochure-style websites. One way you can do this is to draw on your personality and speak from the heart, to make a personal connection with your readers. You need to give them a sense of who you are, build up a persona based on credibility and integrity and promote yourself as an authority on your chosen blog niche.
Obviously this will come through in the content, style and presentation of your blog, but the About page is a great way to reinforce who you are and what your blog stand for. It will enable your readers to quickly work out if your blog is for them, and hopefully convince them that they should stay, subscribe and become a regular visitor to your site.
Building up an audience means building up traffic
By expressing your personality through your About Page, your aim is to build up a following that is engaged and interested in what you have to say and who are loyal blogging friends, subscribers and fans who will promote your blog for you. They may feature your posts in blog carnivals, link to your best articles, retweet on Twitter or Stumble and bookmark the posts they enjoy. All this will lead to a steady and sustainable growth in traffic over time. More blog traffic, as I shouldn’t need to tell you, means more authority, more interesting opportunities and ultimately more income.
Building credibility for sponsors
Sometimes the rewards of a great blog can come indirectly through sponsors or other partners who may want to to work with you. You may be invited to take part in interesting projects, speak at events, be invited on press trips and attract long term advertising. All the potential partners who can offer you such opportunities need to be confident that you a serious player in your chosen niche, and your About page is the first place they will look to be convinced you are worth working with.

- The About page is the first place a new visitor will look to get a quick understanding of what you and your blog are about. It’s purpose is to convince them that they should become a regular reader.
- The About page should focus on the benefits to the reader, rather than just being about me, me, me
- Don’t assume the reader has any prior knowledge of your blog or what it is about
How I started my About Page
I started with one sentence that encapsulates what I feel my blog is about:
Welcome to Heatheronhertravels.com where you’ll find travel inspiration and information , whether you’re a seasoned traveller or enjoying some escapism and dreaming of your next adventure.
This is the equivalent of a marketing slogan – my marketing slogan is:

Next I added a paragraph, elaborating on the benefits that a reader can find by reading my blog.
This is where you’ll find tales from my travels, where I take you with me to meet the people, taste the food and experience the sights and sounds I came across along the way. I have some great great guest posts too featuring even more fabulous destinations you’ll want to put on your wish list. As well as seeing my photos and videos here on my blog, you can explore them in greater detail on my Flickr site and Youtube Channel. You’ll find reviews of must-have travel books and products and there are some great giveaways too. This enables the reader to quickly decide if they want to find out more. I chose to write this as a paragraph, but you may want to break it up into bullet points to emphasise each benefit, it just depends on your style.
I reinforced the message by filming a short video that encapsulates what my blog is about and the benefits to the reader. I uploaded this to my Youtube Channel and then embedded it on the About page. I also added a smaller version of the video at the top of my sidebar.
Next I added my contact details and the different ways that people can access my travel content. You can add your details for E-mail, Flickr, Twitter, Youtube, Linked in and whatever other mediums you use such as Stumble, Delicious.
I also asked people to subscribe to my blog, as this is a key outcome I wanted to encourage to build up my readership.
I added some photos of myself in key travel locations. Adding photos is important for a number of reasons;
- I love photos and images and my blog is full of them, so this in itself demonstrates the style and personality of my blog.
- The photos emphasise my credibility in my chosen niche of travel – how credible is a travel blogger, if they haven’t been to some fabulous destinations?
- Images help to break up the text on the page and make it more visually appealing and welcoming to the reader.
- Photos of me show what I look like and indicate my style and personality to develop the personal connection with the reader.
- Another way you can use photos to build up credibility is to include photos of yourself with key players in your chosen niche or industry. If you have any photos of yourself at an award ceremony receiving a prize for your services to blogging why not use them?
Telling my Travel story
I finished by using a technique called ‘Telling your Life Story’ . This is where you recount your personal journey and how you became interested and an expert in your chosen niche. This is particularly effective if you are blogging about a topic which has a more emotional dimension, such as personal growth, relationships, weight loss, overcoming personal challenges or illness. I didn’t go to town too much, but just enough I hope, to give my readers a sense of who I am.
