How to make a free e-book cover for your blog

by Heather Cowper on March 13, 2011

If you’ve just written an e-book or PDF report and want to find out how to make a simple e-book cover for free, without the cost of employing a graphic designer, this post will tell you how.

I recently put together my first free report, based on a number of articles I’d written about How to use images effectively on your blog. I was invited to run a session on How to use Images for effectively on your blog at the TBEX Conference in Copenhagen last November, in a joint workshop, together with Bart from Spotted by Locals who spoke on Branding for your blog. As preparation for the workshop, I’d written a number of articles on the subject and it seemed sensible to combine the content from these articles into a single PDF report, that the attendees from the conference could download afterwards and I could offer for the benefit of all my readers.

However, it seemed a bit bland to just post a download link and yet I didn’t want to go to the expense of employing a graphic designer for something that I was offering for free. As a result I started casting around for any websites that would allow me to make my own e-book cover easily and found a couple that I’d like to share with you.

This website offers around 30 e-cover designs and 5 of them are free (example shown right), but for the other covers you will need to subscribe at a cost of $9 per month, which will allow you to make an unlimited number of e-book covers. The e-book covers are easy and intuitive to make, so I won’t write detailed instructions, but the main features of the free service from myecovermaker are;

  • Choice of 5 free e-cover designs
  • Option to use your own background image or one of 75 other stock images
  • Insert text in any colour and size with around 40 different text styles
  • Add some clipart from standard graphics or option to upload your own
  • Choice of transparant or coloured background

You can see the 5 free options below and they will probably give sufficient choice if you’re just starting out, and if not, $9 is not a huge amount to pay for a month’s worth of covers.

Another site I found to make free e-covers is ezinefire, who offer the following features

  • 20 different templates
  • 3 text styles in a choice of Times, Courier or Ariel and 7 text colours
  • You can upload your own image or choose from a few different graphics

One thing that I noticed was the image was not as sharp as the one from myecovermaker, although the choice of templates is wider (example shown right). However, this is another good alternatives for making your own free e-book cover.

These were the two options I found to make e-book cover artwork easily and at no cost and there may be other options – if there are any that you have discovered, please do let me know in the comments. If you can find a design that you like in the range of 5 free designs from, this would be my favourite, as the image is clear and sharp and there are a many different possibilities for customising colour and artwork options.

Hi … have just started writing for the kindle and was looking around for how to create e-covers. As I am doing this for the first time maybe I should simply pay for the software for the first time so that I understand it. Thanks

@Roda Of course you must do what works best for you but I always try the free options before paying out – the ones I suggested are quite easy to use and normally you are paying to have more choice over the designs

Hello, I am a book marketing specialist and I create book blogs for authors. Can you recommed free graphics other than what is offered through mye-cover?

@Jerri The ones mentioned in the article are the only free ones I found but of course there are always other paid options.

Great article. Its nice to know that there are sites out there that offer things for free. Being new to this you might say i’m still learning and researching. I checked out both sites but the one i liked was ezinefire but the
problem i had was putting in a head line text. For example ( Why Is The Apple Box Red ) it would only allow you to type ( Why Is The Apple Box ) do they only allow so many words? Would like to know if its me
or if i need to keep looking to find something else i like.

@JP It’s a while since I used this software – maybe as you say there’s a limit on the number of characters, don’t know why. You could try e-mailing their support/developer and see if you get any response, if not maybe one of the other options would still be suitable.

Thank you so much for this reference. I had looked around and everything that stated it was free actually wasn’t, until I stumbled across your blog article and I’ve now created my first cover free and am super excited.

@Wendy So glad that this was of some use to you, good luck with your blogging
